From its modest beginning in 1848 as the last stop before New York City on the single-track New Haven Line, the New Rochelle Railroad Station has played an important role in the life of its community. As New Rochelle’s popularity increased the station quickly grew to become one of the busiest on the line, with Amtrak services commencing in 1987. The easy commute is immortalized in the song, “Only Forty-five Minutes from Broadway”, George M. Cohan’s hit musical of 1906.
“The railroad has been instrumental in shaping New Rochelle for over 150 years,” said New Rochelle City Historian Barbara Davis. “As a preserved landmark that is still utilized on a daily basis, the station fosters a genuine sense of time and place – our community’s great history.”
