Under general direction of the Deputy
Commissioner of Public Works, the Traffic Engineering
Bureau is responsible for all traffic engineering
planning and design work. In addition, it is responsible
for planning, installation and maintenance of traffic
control signals, signs, markings, channelization;
and for related traffic engineering work and advisory
functions. Each year the Bureau replaces over 1,700
traffic and parking signs and maintains the City’s
168 traffic signals.

Included
in the Bureau function if the responsibility for the
installation and maintenance of all street lights, and
replacement of light bulbs, globes, and luminaries on
streets, in parks, and in municipal parking lots. In
total, over 7,000 streetlights are maintained by the
Bureau.
To report
a streetlight in need of repair please contact 235-8257.
Simple repairs are usually accomplished within 1-2 business
days. Repairs requiring Con Edison assistance usually
takes longer.
To report a malfunctioning
traffic signal or street sign in need of repair contact
the Bureau at 235-3859 between 7:00 AM and 3:30 PM.
For emergency traffic signal repair outside of those
hours please notify the Police Department at 654-2300.
