[ARCHIVED] STORYWALK® Program for Family Back to-School Activity

Want a fun and free break from back-to-school shopping and prep? Join us in New Rochelle Downtown for the City’s second STORYWALK® along Main Street.

Beginning Friday August 20 and running through September, the New Rochelle Public Library (@n.r.p.l.), and New Rochelle Downtown Business Improvement District (@nrbid) are partnering to bring a special back-to-school STORYWALK® that will have families and children reading a book’s pages progressively in Downtown merchant windows. The free New Rochelle Downtown STORYWALK® book “Fall is For School” by Robert Neubecker. is now in 15+ Main Street business windows.

“These partnerships with the community represent crucial learning experiences for our children and families,” said City School District of New Rochelle Superintendent Jonathan P. Raymond. “They encourage reading, staying fit, and having fun as we all prepare for a safe return to classes and the start of our new school year.”

STORYWALK® is a national program created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, Vermont and developed in conjunction with the Kellogg-Hubbard Library.

“This book is a wonderful and beautifully illustrated story that families and children of all ages will enjoy,” says Robert Simic, Head Children’s Librarian who has selected the book for New Rochelle’s second STORYWALK®.

Children along with their friends, families and caregivers may begin the story at the Library’s Lawton Street Entrance. There, they can get the map that provides the locations where all of the Fall is For School book’s pages are posted. Throughout the New Rochelle Downtown’s Main Street shops, the participating businesses will have their part of the story displayed in their windows in both English and Spanish.

“New Rochelle Public Library is thrilled to be working with the New Rochelle Downtown BID and the merchants during this special back-to-school season.” said Tom Geoffino, Director, New Rochelle Public Library. “We are so pleased that families and children will be able to read at their own pace and exercise outdoors at the same time. Once participants have had a chance to read the story, shop, and dine, we hope they will stop by the Library to explore and borrow from our wonderful collection of books, DVDs, and CDs,” Geoffino added.

“We can’t wait to have you be part of the magic that is happening here in New Rochelle Downtown when you come throughout September for this special STORYWALK®  activity.'' said Karel Littman, Executive Director, New Rochelle Downtown Business Improvement District (NRBID). “And we hope everyone will grab a bite to eat and do some back-to-school shopping at the same time.”
