Eligibility levels increased for senior citizens, persons with disabilities
Property tax discount for local volunteer firefighters/ambulance workers
At their March meeting, the City Council approved two resolutions that would reduce the tax burden for low-income senior citizens and persons with disabilities and limited income.
The State of New York recently amended their exemptions, allowing local municipalities to adopt these changes. The two proposed amendments raise the income limits for exemptions: the maximum benefits previously at less than $29K annually would be raised to less than $50K, and the maximum income cap of $37,399.99 would be raised to $58,399.99.
“We are grateful for the opportunity from New York State to offer these new exemptions, which were last adjusted in 2009. These expanded benefits will go a long way in helping our most vulnerable residents,” said Finance Commissioner Edward Ritter.
Also approved was a tax exemption of 10% for Volunteer Fighters/Ambulance workers who live in the community served by their volunteer organization. Although the vast majority of the City of New Rochelle has paid firefighters and ambulance workers, there is a portion of the Scarsdale section of New Rochelle that is covered by a volunteer organization.
