[ARCHIVED] Seacord Park Playground Upgraded

William H. Seacord was an employee of the Department of Public Works, who tragically passed away in 1977 at the age of 41 while on the job. Known as a hard and loyal worker and very well-liked by his friends and family, many advocated for the naming of something in the city in his memory. The land of what is now Seacord Park was privately owned and deeded to the City for use as a park/playground in his honor. It originally opened in 1980.

A ceremony on May 22 celebrated the rejuvenation of the park, with recently installed, brand new playground equipment that focuses on climbing and play activities for pre-school and elementary aged children. A soft play surface replaces the old wood chips and sand, along with new perimeter fencing surrounding the park as well. Nearly $300,000 of Community Development Block Grant funds were allocated by the New Rochelle City Council for this project.

Attending the ceremony were Billy’s surviving daughters JoEllen and Caroline, his granddaughter Denise Reyes, and dozens of family members and friends.

“The upgrading of the playground equipment at Seacord Park was long overdue and we are extremely grateful for the federal funds that made this project possible,” said Parks and Recreation Commissioner Vin Parise. “Neighborhood children enjoying this newly upgraded park on a daily basis is a wonderful thing to see, and we aim to continue projects like this at our facilities citywide.”

“I can say personally how valuable it is to live near a neighborhood park,” added City Manager Kathleen Gill. “And while it is important that we maintain and improve the major parks in New Rochelle, it is equally- and even more- important that we maintain and improve our smaller local parks.”

“So many families rely on this park.,” said Council Member Martha Lopez. “We are grateful for the donation so many years ago that made this park possible, and I am proud of our City’s commitment and investment to keep the playground at its best
