New Rochelle’s first Pride Festival, held downtown on June 10th in Ruby Dee Park and adjacent Lawton Street, attracted a diverse and enthusiastic crowd celebrating unity and inclusivity. Coinciding with the City’s ongoing Summer Sizzle Concert Series, attendees roller skated, listened to live performances, snapped photos at the photo wall, and indulged in delectable delights from local food vendors such as Carrito, Leila Empanadas, Sweet Spice, Hawaiian Shaved Ice, and Draper Baker. The evening closed out with dancing on the lawn to a free performance of "Philadelphia Freedom: A Tribute to Elton John," engaging the audience with classic hits.
"New Rochelle is a welcoming, inclusive community in which all people are encouraged to be their true selves," said Mayor Noam Bramson. "By celebrating Pride Month in conjunction with our Summer Sizzle Concert Series, we bring our city together and affirm that love is love."
Community organizations such as the Westchester County Human Rights Commission, New Rochelle Pride, Humane Society of Westchester, Montefiore Medical Center, Center Lane, and The Loft were also on site.
"Ruby Dee Park was the center of a joyous celebration of diversity, inclusivity, and love for Pride in New Rochelle. We are thrilled to honor and support the LGBTQ+ community, recognizing their invaluable contributions to the vibrant tapestry of New Rochelle,” said City Manager Kathleen Gill. “This special evening, within this important month, embodied the spirit of acceptance and unity that defines our City.”
The Mobile City Hall pop-up featured the Department of Parks and Recreation and the New Rochelle Youth Bureau, allowing residents to interact directly with their local government and access city services. The next Mobile City Hall will be at the Juneteenth celebration at City Hall on Monday, June 19th.
The success of the New Rochelle Pride Festival would not have been possible without the collaborative efforts of local organizations, staff and performers.
Continuing the Summer Sizzle series, Saturday’s Downtown Summer Sizzle performer is Popa Chubby who will be bringing hard rock and blues. Opening act will be SWAY at 5pm.
